Understanding the Art of Professor Leon Renfro

Egyptian Bulls

A surrealist work rooted in symbolism, with elements of Afrofuturism that reimagine African history and identity through form and imagination.

These bulls are not meant to exist in real space or time.

They are symbolic.

In this work, Professor Leon Renfro draws from African and Egyptian traditions, where the bull represents power, creation, and sacred life.

Across the African continent and throughout African American folklore, the cow and bull hold deep spiritual meaning. They are not just animals. They are connected to ancestry, protection, and continuity.

In Egyptian Bulls, the figures are intentionally removed from reality. Their soft gold tones and floating presence give them an otherworldly quality, placing them somewhere between history, memory, and spirit.

The Egyptian influence is also intentional.

Ancient Egyptian art often depicted cattle in sacred spaces, particularly in tombs. In this context, the bulls can be understood as companions to Hathor, the great cow goddess, known as a protector of families.

This work is not simply about form.

It is about connection.

Connection to Africa.

Connection to ancient knowledge.

Connection to lineage that continues to reveal itself over time.

We don’t just hang the art. We carry it on.
