Another incredible discovery from Professor Leon Renfro’s archives.
While cataloging my grandfather’s collection, I came across this exhibition announcement from 1989 for Forerunners and Newcomers: An Exhibition of Houston’s Leading African American Artists at the University of Houston Clear Lake Art Gallery.
As I read through the list of artists, I couldn’t help but pause.
There was my grandfather’s name.
Leon Renfro.
Surrounded by an extraordinary group of artists, including his mentor, Dr. John T. Biggers, and many others who helped shape Houston’s rich African American artistic legacy.
Every new discovery gives me a deeper appreciation for the remarkable company he kept and the impact he made as an artist, educator, and mentor.
This find is especially meaningful because next month I’ll be beginning my master’s program at the University of Houston Clear Lake, the very university that hosted this exhibition more than three decades ago.
It’s amazing how history has a way of coming full circle.
I’m honored to preserve my grandfather’s legacy while beginning the next chapter of my own.
We don’t just hang the art. We carry it on.
