Meeting Artist Vernon Simmons

One of the highlights of the evening was meeting artist Vernon Simmons, an Airforce veteran and graduate of Texas Southern University.

It was truly refreshing to spend time speaking with him. He was incredibly informative and generous in sharing the stories behind his artwork. As we stood in front of his pieces, he explained the settings, symbolism, techniques, and creative methods he used to bring his visions to life. He also shared what inspired him as an artist, including stories about his family and their artistic history.

Listening to him discuss his work gave me a deeper appreciation not only for the artwork itself, but also for the experiences, influences, and traditions that helped shape it. Conversations like these remind me why preserving artistic legacies and learning directly from artists is so important.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Mr. Simmons and could have talked with him for much longer. I look forward to staying in touch with him, learning more about his artistic journey, and hopefully spending more time together in the future.

Most of all, I look forward to seeing him again at the Brown Renfro Exhibition this August.

We don’t just hang the art. We carry it on.™
