MR.JOHN DAVIS

MR.JOHN DAVIS
This piece of art was especially meaningful to me because it was created by artist John Davis, one of my grandfather's students and someone he spent a great deal of time mentoring.
As I have researched my grandfather's life and career, one name has come up again and again: John Davis. So many people who knew Professor Leon Renfro have told me how much he enjoyed teaching Mr.Davis and how much time they spent together. The respect between teacher and student was evident, and their relationship clearly left a lasting impact on both of them.
I have had the opportunity to interview Mr. Davis before, and hearing him speak about my grandfather provided valuable insight into the kind of educator, mentor, and artist Professor Renfro was. In fact, the photograph showing my grandfather demonstrating screen printing includes a young John Davis as one of his students.
Although I did not get a chance to take a picture with Mr. Davis during this exhibit, seeing his artwork brought a smile to my face. I look forward to taking a photograph with him at the Brown Renfro Exhibition in August and continuing to learn more about the special bond he shared with my grandfather.
We don't just hang the art. We carry it on.™
