Spending time with the artwork itself...

One of the most meaningful parts of visiting Sacred Web: The Artistic Lineage of John T. Biggers was spending time with the artwork itself.

As curator of the Brown Renfro Exhibition, I am constantly learning more about the artistic environment that shaped generations of artists at Texas Southern University. Walking through these galleries offered an opportunity to study Dr. John T. Biggers’ drawings, paintings, prints, and ceramics while gaining a deeper understanding of the themes, techniques, and cultural storytelling that influenced so many of his students.

My grandfather, Leon Renfro, was one of those students. He studied under Dr. Biggers before building his own career as an artist, designer, educator, and professor. Seeing these works reminds me that every artist’s story is connected to those who came before them.

The more we learn, the more we understand how these artistic lineages continue to shape new generations.

We don’t just hang the art. We carry it on.™
