Some discoveries stop you in your tracks.

Some discoveries stop you in your tracks.

As I’ve been cataloging my grandfather Professor Leon Renfro’s archives, I came across this postcard from Ethiopia that was mailed to him in 1981 while he was teaching in the Art Department at Texas Southern University.

What makes this discovery even more meaningful is that the postcard is signed by Alvia.

Today, more than four decades later, I have the incredible privilege of working alongside Dr. Alvia Wardlaw to curate the Brown Renfro Exhibition at Texas Southern University.

When I sent her a photo of the postcard

Her response?

“Thank you, Avery! This brings back memories. What a find!!”

Moments like this remind me that preserving an artist’s legacy isn’t just about artwork. It’s about friendships, collaborations, correspondence, and the lives that intersected along the way.

Every box I open reveals another story waiting to be told.

I can’t wait to continue sharing these discoveries with you.

We don’t just hang the art. We carry it on.
